Snow Fences and Plows Keep Canadian Pacific Tracks Clear
The Canadian Pacific Railway maintains over 1 800 miles of snow fences along more than 10 000 miles of track in the west. In exposed areas up to three fence lines are needed to prevent drifted snow from blocking rights of way. Prairie snowfall runs 12 to 14 feet, driven into drifts by winds, with plows backing up fences when needed. Glacier's Connaught Tunnel corridor sees 33 feet of snow yearly, requiring rotary plows and push-plows to manage heavy drifts. Rotary plows spin at 400 rpm, hurling snow away from the line in a raging maelstrom.
