Streptomycin and Tuberculosis Hope and Cautions
The Canadian Medical Association Journal editorial notes streptomycin shows tentative benefit in progressive exudative pulmonary tuberculosis, mainly in 60 to 90 days, as an adjunct rather than a cure. It may aid surgery prep in acute phases and shows striking improvement in tuberculous sinuses and ulcerative tracheobronchial disease, with possible mortality reduction in miliary TB but with toxicity and long treatment limits. The overall outlook is cautious, suggesting future advances could replace streptomycin as a primary remedy.
