Annual Cereals for Forage Aid on Hamiota Farms

The Hamiota Echo notes slow start to hay and pasture crops due to a cool wet spring. Cattle producers are advised to consider annual cereals such as oats or barley to supplement forage. Oats offer palatability while barley often yields more dry matter. Spring sowing of winter cereals also provides good pasture in the seeding year with regrowth for rotational grazing.

Ag updates on grazing options with cereals

Farmers are advised to use a 50 50 mix of fall rye or winter triticale with an annual cereal such as oats or barley to extend forage. Cereal crops can be used as pasture or harvested as greenfeed with regrowth grazed later. Seedling blight risk rises in cold wet soils 5 to 10 C. seed treatments improve germination and stand establishment per the 1995 Crop Protection guide.

Harvesting the whirlwind in liquor policy debates

The piece argues liquor laws are overhauled yet ineffective and calls for bolder steps such as zero tolerance. It cites Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario debates on raising the drinking age, suspensions for impaired driving, and vehicle impoundment for disqualified or intoxicated drivers. It urges a universal blood alcohol limit of 0.00 percent.
