Canada plans a 200 ship government merchant fleet
Ottawa aims for a government owned fleet of about 200 cargo ships if the current ship building program continues. Munitions Minister Howe said Canada would keep ships in mutual aid with the UK, sell 70 to 75 ships to the United States to obtain dollars, and use chartered vessels to staff crews until the war ends. The Park Steamship Company operates ships with Canadian crews for a small government fee, with earnings funding fleet costs and postwar deployment. By end of 1941 Canada had built four or five ships and held 16 or 17 new ships in mercantile service.

Warburton hails Allied gains in Africa over Pacific
Eliot Warburton, chief of the UK information office in Ottawa, says Allies have captured more land, prisoners, and war materiel in Africa than the Japanese have taken in the Pacific. He notes Britain bears the largest overall wartime load, with heavy Atlantic naval duties and vast manpower. The Royal Navy, he adds, has destroyed or captured over 6,000,000 tons of Axis shipping and numerous warships, with its losses fully replaced.
