A skunk destroyed in Hamiota on Tuesday May 2 displayed abnormal behavior and hunted two people but did not bite anyone. The animal was sent for rabies testing while residents are urged to keep pets vaccinated and report sightings to the municipal office.
Education Minister Drew Caldwell announced the province will implement an early year Grade 3 assessment for the 2000-2001 school year. The plan includes fall classroom testing of reading and mathematics, parent and educator consultations, and followup plans to support struggling students. Standards for higher grades continue unchanged.
The last Echo iteration on the Hamiota Co op annual meeting carried corrected figures. Members will share about 70,000 dollars based on purchases, with 40,000 dollars paid to estates of members and over age members during the year.
A new illuminated sign at Hamiota Collegiate greets visitors and lists upcoming events as well as student successes. The sign was funded by school fundraising with help from the Student Council, Parent Advisory Group, and Hamiota Recycling.
The Hamiota Legion Auxiliary meeting on April 25 discussed forming a Color Party with ten volunteers led by Harvey Pollock and training for millennium events. They ordered 53 packets of tulips for the Legion 75th anniversary and prepared for fall planting while promoting Peggy Gatoway’s book Women of the War Years featuring Gerry Davis and Eileen Edwards. The book, donated to publishing, will circulate in June and be placed in the local library after member circulation. The next meeting is May 23 with new members welcome.
