Seed Cleaning Plant Act Reform Urged in Manitoba
Sessional highlights urge immediate revision of the 1958 Seed Cleaning Plant Act. The minister promised changes in 1967 and 1969, but no revision this session. Data from Nelson Shoemaker show Alberta operates 61 seed plants with high production, while Manitoba relies on Rivers plant with few others. A 1965 seed grain survey found 56.3 percent of weed seeds and ungraded seed among 856 samples, with 35.2 percent cleaned in country elevators and many seed not adequately cleaned.
