Cropping Practices Address Common Root Rot on Prairies
R. J. Ledingham of the CDA Research Station explains that common root rot reduces wheat and barley yields by 5 to 12 percent annually. Early signs appear as brown spots at leaf bases, spreading to roots. spores persist for about three years. Deep seeding worsens the disease, so shallow planting of 1.5 to 2 inches is advised, with longer non-host rotations to reduce incidence.
