Birdtail River School Board approves lots purchase and funding moves

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 board met in Shoal Lake on March 13 1969 with trustees and inspectors present. They adopted minutes from March 4 1969 approved 1500 dollar lot purchase in Birtle subject to Public School Finance Board approval, reinvested 5000 dollar James Jackson Scholarship in a five year 7 percent GIC, raised Route 97 pay by 2.80 per day, and authorized payments for the Hamita Collegiate building project. The group adjourned to March 20 1969 and discussed Shoal Lake and Strathclair school inspections.

Endurance Skate-A-Thon Raises Funds In Hamiota

A March 16, 1969 skate-a-thon drew 135 skaters with times from 1/2 to 13 hours. Five winners received trophies after 13 hours. Bill McLaren earned the highest hourly rate at 9.00. Estimated to raise 750.00, the event noted generous support from sponsors and volunteers including Don Menni e Wayne Reid Al Stevens and Ivan Donald.

W I Meeting Isabella Hosts Crochet Lesson

The regular W I meeting at Mrs J E Fink beiner’s home drew 11 attendees with Mrs J Coxworth presiding. A discussion on Education followed the program A Selected Review of Adult Education Programs in Manitoba and a crocheting lesson was taught by Mrs Lome Wright, leading to a plan to continue next Monday.

Vacation Handbook For ’69 Available

Winnipeg Manitoba launches the 1969 edition of the Manitoba Vacation Handbook. Over 200 000 color bound copies are produced annually by the Tourism and Recreation Ministry for Manitoba’s major tourist markets. The handbook compiles entries from chambers of commerce, transport firms, hotels, and government agencies, detailing attractions, hours, liquor outlets, hunting rules, convention facilities, and more. Copies are available from the Tourist Reception Office in the Legislative Building, Winnipeg.

4 H Hamitoa March Meeting Plans Dessert Party

Debbie Nykolia opened the Hamiota 4 H march meeting with 32 members answering roll call. Plans were begun for a May Dessert Party and a few members gave impromptu speeches. Next meeting scheduled for April.

Provincial school aid raised to seventy percent

Premier Walter Weir announced from Winnipeg the provincial share of the school foundation program would rise to 70 percent from 65 percent. He said unconditional municipal grants would increase to $8 per person, a little over 21 percent. The measures aim to ease municipal tax burdens.

Half of Manitoba Doctors Opt Out

The Manitoba Medical Association reports 385 doctors will practice outside the Medicare plan effective April 1. This represents about half of physicians in active practice with many urban rural areas showing opt outs. The Manitoba Medical Services Insurance Corporation has also received 32 additional resignations from individual doctors.
