Annual Cash Bonspiel Draws Western Manitoba Curlers

Western Manitoba rinks converge on the Hamiota Curling Rink for the Annual Invitational Cash Bonspiel offering 400 dollars in prize money. Five local skips face fifteen visiting teams led by Garth Strachan Art Oakden Lorne Caldwell Buck Mathison and Blair Bailey with newcomers including Menzies Shoal Take Hill Lenore Taylor Gilbert Plains Armour Souris Cavcary Brandon Kostuik Angusville. Play runs Friday evening through Sunday with draws 7 00 9 00 pm Friday 9 30 am 12 30 pm 3 00 pm 5 30 pm 8 00 pm Saturday and 12 30 pm 3 00 pm Sunday finals 5 15 pm.

Hamiota Women’s Institute Holds March Meeting

The Hamiota Women’s Institute met March 7 with 15 members. They discussed Canada 100 years of nation building, viewed a study program, and planned faster progress on the Enriched Housing Program. A Community Room book drive starts April for Martin Aid.

Royalite Show Winner Bill Sorrell Featured on TV

A Boissevain man, Bill Sorrell, and his wife Velma won a trip as Royalite fly-in contestants. The couple and their children, staying with Bill’s parents, were guests of Royalite and watched the broadcast from Manitoba. The program airs Monday March 20.

Obituary of Joseph Albert Reid Passes in Hamiota

Joseph Albert Reid died Sunday March 3 at Hamiota Hospital. Born January 6 1908 in Oak River he lived in the district and ran his father’s homestead. Survived by sister Olive McKenzie of Oakville Ontario and brothers James Argue Norman Argue and Clarence Argue. Funeral held at Oak River United Church with pallbearers and flower bearers listed, interment in Oak River Cemetery. McConnell Bros. Funeral Home of Hamiota arranged proceedings.

Hamiota Bonspiel Honors Award Winners and Aggregate Tie

The Hamiota Ladies Bonspiel opened March 6 with 44 rinks 25 visiting and 19 local. Prizes were awarded across Confederation and John A events with Vera Cooke Shirley Little Pat Kirk and others taking top honors. The aggregate tie pitted Vera Cooke and Shirley Little with plans for a yearlong trophy display.

Hamiota Grace Rebekah Lodge Hosts Grand Assembly in Winnipeg

The Hamiota Grace Rebekah Lodge opened the Grand Assembly in Winnipeg on Tuesday morning with ceremonial introductions of distinguished guests and a Centennial theme display. Mrs Coupland designed coats of arms backed by four Maple Leafs as props while Mrs Elgin McConnell narrated with sincerity, leaving locals proud of Canadian identity and their town’s girls.

William G M Bridge Dies at 57 in Hamiota

Funeral service for W. G. Bridge, 57, who died February 16 1967 in Hamiota Hospital, was held February 20 at 2 p.m. in Hamiota United Church. Born in Isabella, he farmed in Hamiota district before moving to town in 1966. Survived by wife Beryl McLean two sons Keith and Glen, a daughter-in-law Agnes, two grandsons and two sisters. Interment in Hamiota.
