Robertson wins the Hamiota mayor by election in a race among four candidates Ken Briggs Dwayne Oakden and Robertson. Of 780 eligible voters 450 cast ballots with Robertson receiving 224 votes. He chairs his first council meeting the next day and serves until October 28 1998 when regular elections are held.
Finance Minister Eric Stefanson says despite flood relief and health care spending, the third quarter report forecasts a 43.5 million surplus for 1997/98, about 16.7 million above prior forecast, with health care commitments totaling 93.6 million including hospital program funding and physicians' services.
A severe blizzard delayed publishing across southwestern Manitoba. Snowfalls of about a foot blanketed towns like Neepawa Boissevain and Brandon with up to a metre on Hwy 10 near Boissevain on Feb 27. The storm halted highway travel forcing the Hamiota Echo to shift its March 2 edition to Monday with mailed papers on the 3rd.

The deadline is May 15 1998 with a planning lead time to April 13 1998. transportation outside the catchment is not routinely provided.
