Hamiota Manitoba saw the HiWay Collision foursome skipped by Ed Sparrow win the Campbell Flowers Trophy for an unblemished record at the 1988 Hamiota Open Bonspiel. Ed Sparrow Doug Northam Tom Northam and Don Walden claimed the top prize among fifty two entries after eight days of competition.

Legion Auxiliary meets at Hamiota on February twenty three
The Ladies Auxiliary to Legion Branch 174 convened with nineteen members. President Maxine Cumming chaired. Olive Newton acted secretary. Alice Pedlow played piano. Nora Knight advanced and retired the colors. Minutes and correspondence were read. Maud Bryant reported finances. A Zone meeting in Kenton on February 15 was well received. March plans include Red Cross canvassing and cookbook orders at $5 each. Some members will attend the Brandon district meeting on March 21. Petty Fund won by Eileen Brown. Lunch was served.

Cardale hosted the Hamiota District Bonspiel on January 23 with Oak River 4-H Club as host. Eighteen rinks played two games each starting at 9:00 a.m. Dean Bryant’s rink won with 38 points, followed by Shelley Burt and Sean Bryant.

First Grains Payment Cheques On Their Way
Ottawa announces the 1987 extension of the Special Canadian Grains Program with over 630 million dollars in initial payments to western producers. The 1.1 billion program aims to offset low grain and oilseed prices from the EC US subsidy war, with final irrigation supplements due in June and special crop cheques by April. Producers outside Wheat Board areas expect early delivery, while first time applicants must file by March 16, 1988.
