In the early hours of Wednesday June 25 a lone driver on Hwy 21 fell asleep and veered into a cemetery. The van knocked down three pines, knocked the fence loose, dislodged three head stones, and finally stopped after entering the cemetery. The driver credited seatbelt use for escaping injury.
The Hamiota Collegiate Awards Night and Graduation Ceremonies were held on Wednesday June 25. The Class of 1997 included 27 graduates who after receiving their diplomas par ticipated in the Grand March. A complete listing of awards will appear in the next issue of the Hamiota Echo.
Ed Brethour receives the Rural Forum Leadership Award at Rural Forum 97 in Brandon for significant rural economic development work. A founding member of Hamiota Economic Development Corporation, he chairs regional boards and serves as a goodwill ambassador across Canada and the United States.
NDP Justice Critic Gord Mackintosh condemns the Filmon government for abolishing the 30 per day juror allowance for juries of ten days or less. He warns the move could push working poor to avoid service, while ministers defend the change as reflecting realistic compensation. He notes service averages six days and cites low income impact.
