Storm Pounds Hamiota Area With Rain Hail and Flooding
A major June storm hit Hamiota at about 3:00 a.m. with heavy rain and strong winds. Rainfall varied from under half an inch to over four inches in areas south of town, with extensive hail and flooded basements. Wayne and Doreen Angus suffered farm damage including broken windows and a damaged camper, Brian Smith lost part of a roof on a cattle shed, and crops were washed out. The Village of Hamiota saw wet basements and water seepage while local businesses reported water on floors and three feet of basement flooding at the hotel. Freezers toppled and food was discarded as drains overflowed and water rose.
