Forage Cutting Timing Boosts Cattle Returns
Manitoba forage specialists urge early cutting of alfalfa at bud stage and sweet clover at first bloom to maximize nutrition and palatability. Cattle fed properly cured, early cut forage may gain more efficiently or produce more milk per forage unit. Over curing reduces leaf protein content and overall hay quality.

Hay Production Tips for Quality Forage and Efficiency
Experts advise timing alfalfa cuts for 57 percent leaf content and avoiding excess harvest. For farmers with over 20 cattle, buying a conditioner pays off through higher quality and greater hay quantity.
