The Oak River Friendship Club received a New Horizons grant of 8090 dollars to establish weekly carpet bowling shuffleboard and card activities in the Arena waiting room with renovations funded. A Board of Directors led by Bob King formed committees to purchase equipment and plan programs.
A Women’s Missionary Club retreat gathered four Hamiota members Mrs Beck Mrs Audrey Gurr Mrs Gwen Taylor and Mrs Anne Davison plus two Strathclair women at Central Pentecostal Bible College Saskatoon for a weekend of prayer testimony and fellowship The event emphasized prayer and spiritual needs being met through faith and God’s will.
Neil Douglas McNiven died at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on Saturday June 4 1977 in his 61st year. Cremation was held in Port Alberni with interment to be in Hamiota later. Known as The Duke, he farmed in Hamiota before retirement. He leaves wife Liz a son Doug of Saskatoon and daughters Donna Vancouver and Heather Port Alberni. Donations to the Heart Fund may be made in Heather Hamm's name in Port Alberni.
