On Tuesday June 8 two semi loads of red aggregate arrived for the Red Sox diamond in Hamiota. Volunteers spread fabric then laid the material, with the two loads covering about a third of the infield base paths. Each load cost about 800 and four more are likely needed. Kerry Knight is shown harrowing a new layer.
Canon Ben Whitfield of Lincolnshire England dropped into the Echo office last week. He served as rector at Christ Anglican Church from 1943 to 1946 before moving to Birtle. In Hamiota he stayed with Dot and René Lepine and renewed long standing acquaintances while tracing his Canadian service.
Local swim clubs coordinate to hire a single instructor Faye Little for a six week season. Lessons run July 5 to 16 at Burlington Beach, July 19 to 30 at Salt Lake with two more instructors, and August 2 to 13 at Shoal Lake North End. Manitoba nurses vote 89.9 percent to approve a two year deal covering about 10 000 nurses in 89 locals. The agreement secures full protection from Bill 22 in exchange for a two percent salary cut to be restored at contract end. The Children’s Rehab Centre local rejected the offer as a protest vote against government cuts. City of Winnipeg public health nurses also accepted. Negotiations for municipal hospital nurses to continue with 1995 talks set for fall.
