Bulgaria and Bulgaria’s King in Hitler’s Chess

W. K. Kelsey argues in the Detroit News that rumors of a Bulgarian revolt are likely premature. King Boris holds bargaining chips that Hitler cannot easily repay with promises. An offer of access to the Aegean through Greece would anger Turkey. Romanian land would inflame Romania, already hostile to Hungary. Bulgaria’s economy is largely self-sufficient, limiting economic pressure. If Boris remains firm, he may stay free of entanglement and gain time as rumors swirl about Horix’s conscience.
