Manitoba Well Water Shows Widespread Bacterial Contamination
A Manitoba Rural Groundwater Quality Initiative report found about 42 percent of roughly 1000 private wells tested positive for total coliform bacteria and 3 percent for E coli. Shallow wells over 50 feet showed higher contamination with nitrates common in the south and west. Livestock presence did not directly correlate with contamination. on site factors and well maintenance were key. The provincial program offers annual testing at $6.75 per sample with free follow ups and lab drop-off via Ag Office. John Patterson serves as Manitoba Agriculture contact for Hamiota.
