Experimental Farm Notes on Strip Farming and Dust Drift
High winds and dust in 1943 warn of more soil drifting years. Dominion Farms tests strip farming at Melita Reclamation Station and at Crystal City Boissevain Goodlands Lyleton Pipestone, showing 10 to 20 rod wide strips reduce drift but not cure on light soils. Trash covers and mulching boost protection. four hundred acres at Goodlands stayed intact while nearby bare fields drifted. Strips with large machinery use labor less efficiently than big fields, but production costs are comparable. Fodder and pasture crops grow well on strips in a mixed rotation, essential to prevent drift.
