Many went back, but over a million sought resettlement elsewhere, leading to IRROA efforts and ships to transport displaced persons. By 1950, 595,000 had been resettled, 700,000 remained in camps awaiting placement, with a charter fleet of forty vessels moving about 30,000 people monthly.
