Environment Minister Brian Ransom announced the Oak Lake Special Canada Goose Refuge will be reduced to roughly one third of its original size. The 1966 refuge aimed to protect geese released in Oak and Plum Lake marshes for a breeding flock, but success has been limited and nearby landowners oppose restrictions on hunting on their farms.
Winnipeg reports the Mines, Natural Resources and Environment Department warns of a restricted deer hunting season this fall due to harsh winter conditions. Deer losses ranged from 15 to 35 percent across regions, though overall mortality was lower than feared thanks to good prewinter condition and department feeding programs.
Achievement night for the Piston Pushers was held June 28 at Denny Kirk's shop in Hamiota. Seven boys enrolled in the 4-H Mechanics course showed projects, answered questions, and received red ribbons with Paul Robinson earning the Most Ambitious trophy from Oakner Pool Elevator.
A tea on June 17 1979 in Chumah Hall Hamiota honored June Reid as she leaves town for Medicine Hat Alberta. Guests welcomed her with lilacs candles and a crystal bowl gift. Reverend Lynas spoke and about 215 people signed the guest book.
Grade five winner Lesley Small of Harold Hatcher School Transcona tops the Endangered Habitat Wildlife in Danger poster contest during National Wildlife Week. The event, Canada’s first of its kind, was sponsored by the Canadian Wildlife Federation and the Mines Natural Resources and Environment Department to mark the United Nations Year of the Child. Runners-up include Darren Pulock Grandview Jennie Davis Jenpeg Angela Hoeppner Snowflake Richard Like Beausejour Louis Knott St Theresa Pt David Chernetz Robert Andrews School Melanie Tremblay Monroe School.
The first ever competitive T Ball game on Tuesday June 26 featured Oak River Razorbacks vs Hamiota Huggers in a hard fought match with standout performances. Jeff Hume led Oak River with six hits including five homers Cory Smith led Hamiota with three hits including a grand slam.
A June 15 shower in Chumah Hall honored Debbie Nykoliation, bride elect of July 7. Eunice Bartell attended the guest book. corsages marked Debbie and her escorts. Debbi and Doug’s roles as teacher and game warden were reflected in decor. piano music and a duet followed the gift viewing.
