McConnell Sale Brings High Prices for Calves and Steers

The McConnell Show and Sale on June 27 at McConnell Grounds drew 84 entries. Shar on Gray won Grand Champion 4-H calf with a 900 lb Shorthorn sold to Hamiota Co-Op for 41.25 per lb, earning the McConnell Pool Elevator Trophy. Reserve Champion went to Carol Parker with a 1020 lb Hereford sold to Hamiota I.G.A. for 36.50 per lb.

Chimo Day Plans Near Completion in Hamiota Centennial

Hamiota prepares a one day Centennial celebration on July 11 with the downtown transformed into the Village Square. Events include glee club, school band, Major ettes, Highland Day, authentic pow wow, square dancing, contests from beard growing to fiddling, pony rides, kiddies band, street dance and a pork barbecue. Over one thousand invitations issued. Chimo committee members are Anne Perlmutter Ethel Randell and Al Stevens.

Lizzie O'Neill Honored At Hamiota Retirement Party

Ninety well wishers attend a come and go party in Hamiota to honor Miss Lizzie O'Neill who retires after 29 years in the Post Office. The event at Postmaster Jack Coombs home featured a money tree and a ribbon with 400 names.

Sox Record 10-2 as Glennis Scott Tops Spuris 2-1

Glennis Scott earned the win allowing 6 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts as the Sox defeated Spuris 2-1. Bryan Smith keyed a late 8th inning triple and Mel Smith drove in a run. Souris tied the game in the 2nd on two hits and two sacrifices.

Wilma Cowling Rites Held After Sudden Passing

Funeral services were conducted at Crandall United Church for Wilma Helen Cowling 37 who died June 18 1970 at Hamiota Hospital. Interment followed at Crandall Cemetery Campbell's Funeral Home directed services Pallbearers and flower bearers listed Wilma born April 19 1933 at Kamsack Saskatchewan raised in Makaroff Man educated in Manitoba taught at Crandall married William R Cowling in 1953 survived by husband and seven children plus parents and siblings.

Departing Family Honoured Before Moving to Boissevain

Wayne Fleming and family were honored at a gathering hosted by Mr and Mrs Russ Hunter. Lloyd Anderson read the address on behalf of Oakner and Scotia friends. Gifts included lamps, a serving tray, a bowl, and pictures for the children. Wayne invited visitors to Bois sevain and about 40 people attended lunch and social hour.

Local Explorer Group Holds Graduation at Hamiota

The Explorers met on May 14 for final exercises and graduation of six members Cindy Seddon Ruth Maitland Paige Clark Irene Thompson Janice Carlson and Jody Kirk. New officers named for the coming year are President Dienna Mathison Vice Elaine Partridge Secretary Patty Hawkins Treasurer Karen Miller Pianist Sue Ann Duncan and Press Elaine Partridge. The gathering included a lunch and entertainment with many adopted grandmothers present.

Canada unveils a new twenty dollar note with a color rich portrait of the Queen and enhanced security features. Banks distribute the notes nationwide starting June 22, with plans for a family look across denominations and portraits of Laurier Macdonald King and Borden on other notes.
