Experimental Farm Notes on Brandon Breeding Flock
Fourteen pens host a breeding flock at Brandon Experimental Farm this year. Each pen holds fourteen barred rocks with twelve females and one male. Of the females 161 are mature hens and 24 are pallets. Incubation uses a warm incubator for early hatching with comfortable brooder quarters and balanced rations. Eggs are saved about ten days after mating and first chick lots emerge in the first week of March. Death losses are lower in cold weather than when daytime brooder warmth is excessive. Autumnly mature pullets boost winter egg production and egg size. Early hatched cockerels fetch higher prices, and young breeding males mature more fully than those entering winter quarters before growth completion.
