Hamiota Welcomes New Doctor Dr John Gilfoyle

Irish born Dr John Gilfoyle will join Hamiota Medical Clinic after a roundabout effort begun in Newfoundland. He holds degrees in agriculture and animal husbandry from Trinity College Dublin and plans to move with his family once Canadian work permit and immigration steps finalize. Dr Ed Hudson will host the new partner once approvals clear.

Manitoba Legislature Opens February 25 With Historic Firsts

The 32nd Manitoba Legislature will open February 25 led by Premier Howard Pawley. Harry Harapiak and Conrad Santos will move and second the Throne Speech. The 57-seat body features 34 New Democrats and 23 Tories, seven women, and Manitoba’s first female Lieutenant-Governor Pearl McGonigal. Harapiak, a CNR engineman and trustee, will lead debate. Santos, a political studies professor and longtime resident, holds multiple civic roles.

Manitoba Horticultural Association Holds 84th Convention

The 84th annual convention gathers in Brandon to honor Winnipeg area centennial events with February sessions at the Agricultural Extension Centre. Workshops include floral photography hydroponics herb gardening and garden gadgets. Dr Henry Marshall will speak on propagating roses. Registration is 5 for full convention 3 for single sessions.

NDP Holds Annual Meeting in Beulah Hall

Sixty people braved frigid weather for the Virden NDP Association annual meeting in Beulah Hall on January 12. Delegates were set for February convention, officers installed for 1982, and a financial report approved. Guest speaker Hon. Bill Uruski addressed agriculture issues including the Crow Rate and Beef Check-off plan. Winners of the Afghan cushion daily raffle were Florence Wowryk, Anne Borody of Shoal Lake and Ed Mysko of Saskatchewan.
