Soil scientists say following cereal crop fertilizer guidelines from soil tests can yield wheat and barley forecasts for spring from fall conditions. With adequate moisture, weed control, and cultural practices, 39 bushels per acre of wheat and 63 to 70 bushels of barley are possible when nitrogen is 22 pounds per acre or more. Very low nitrogen 0-22 pounds per acre could drop to 29-39 bushels wheat or 43-64 bushels barley per acre.
