Village And Rural Councils Inaugural Meetings Held

In Hamiota on January 7 1969 the village council elected Harv ey Gray to fill a vacant seat from his retirement. Councils established standing committees for 1969 with Caldwell Gray McLaren and others. deputy mayor Wood. The Rural Council named Raymond Foxton to replace Arthur Knight who did not seek re election. Montgomer y as Reeve and Amy Gant as secretary treasurer with multiple committees listed.

McConnell 4-H Beef Club Hosts Jim Scott Talk

McConnell 4-H beef club held its December meeting with guest speaker Mr. Jim Scott Reeve of Blanchard Municipal ity addressing municipal affairs. Members faced a Red Book quiz and planned the January session covering the last half. Six members will present three demonstrations while a tour to Brandon included the Auction War t Pool Packers and Mr Sam Gurt dairy farm.

Christmas Candlelight Service at Oak River United Church

The Oak River United Church held its annual Christmas Candlelight service with the Messangers and Explorers. The Sunday School presented the Christmas story and sent gifts to the Family Bureau in Winnipeg with a 136 dollar collection, 111 dollars to the Nigerian Fund, and the Junior Choir performed under Mrs. Stan Henry with piano by Mrs. Fraser Angus.

Maggie Ann Reid Passes Away at 85 in Manitoba

Maggie Ann Reid widow of W. D. Reid of Oak River Manitoba died December 7 1968 in Hamiota Hospital at eighty five. She was born in Scotland in 1885 and came to Canada in 1913. Survived by two sons Bill and Alan two daughters Betty and Effie two brothers John Brancon and George New York City and seven grandchildren. Funeral at Oak River United Church December 10 conducted by Rev V.

The first W I meeting of the year on January 2, led by Mrs. Myrtle White, noted lower attendance due to weather and holiday. Reports covered committee activity, cemetery tree lines, flower beds, hall redecorations, kitchen cupboards, and memorial hall improvements.

Births in Manitoba rose 255 from 1967 to 1968 totaling 16 885. July led with 1 533 births and March had 1 527 while November recorded 730. Marriages climbed to 7 874 from 7 751 in 1967 with August and June the peak months. Deaths reached 7 392 versus 7 174 in 1967, with data through November and December estimates.
