Manitoba Government and MCNA co sponsor a one day seminar March 16 at Neepawa Yellowhead Centre titled A New Agenda for Rural Manitoba. The event targets public officials and farm and business groups to discuss rural development and future strategies. Premier Gary Filmon will speak at lunch amid sessions on financial and social issues with speakers including Brian Ransom Harry Mardon Sid Gordon and Stuart Bond.

Manitoba officials forecast low spring runoff with soils dry after last summer’s heat. Flood risk remains along the Souris River and small southeastern waterways. Snow south of the Trans-Canada Highway above average while north is below. Red and Assiniboine runs likely below normal. The River Forecast Centre will update the outlook March 23 based on late winter snow surveys.

Journey for Sight a roaring success
Lions Eye Bank drive Journey for Light raises over 30 000 during a three day snowmobile trek from The Pas to Winnipeg January 26 29. Forty one participants contributed to a milestone year doubling last year’s revenue and advancing the Eye Bank’s corneal transplant program with pledges presented at a Lions Telethon and banquet.

Hamiota School Band Performs at Optimist Festival Winnipeg
The Hamiota School Band of 62 Grade 7 8 and 9 students traveled by two buses to Winnipeg on February 22 to perform at the Assiniboine Optimist Band Festival under director John Gibson. They visited the Planetarium and museums before a performance at the Winnipeg Convention Centre featuring Court of the Patriarchs and Swan Lake. The event drew participants from across Manitoba and the band thanks the community for support from a recent fruit sale amid an orange stock issue.
