Leaf rust hits Manitoba wheat in 1962 but causes little lasting damage

Cereal crops agronomist A L D Martin says a confluence of conditions in 1962 caused a severe leaf rust outbreak in Manitoba wheat but did not seriously affect future yields. Delayed seeding due to rain pushed back varieties Selkirk and Pembina, both resistant to leaf and stem rust, while Lee remains vulnerable to newer stem rust races. Early seeding with proper fertilizer helps wheat stay ahead of rust damage.
