Germination Tests Urged For Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta Seed
Dr F J Greaney of Line Elevators Farm Service Winnipeg notes germination tests on 470 samples of wheat oats barley and flax from Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. Tables show 10.9 percent wheat below 71 percent germination in Manitoba and 4.8 percent in Alberta. Oats and barley in Saskatchewan run low as well. Alberta shows the worst seed viability with up to 22.4 percent oats and 20.7 percent flax under 71 percent. Farmers in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan advised to test small grain seeds. new seed may be needed due to frost damage. Free seed testing is available via Line Elevators Farm Service.
