Winter Carnival Set to Go in Hamiota on February 18 1989

Hamiota hosts a full day of sports and entertainment in the 55th Winter Carnival celebration. The event features sleigh rides, cross country skiing demos, a snow sculpture contest judging at 5:00 p.m., tea and bake sale, and multiple skits and races at the Hamiota Memorial Arena. Activities include queen candidates, costume parade, speed and novelty races, a clown costume identity contest, a draw to the button turkey shoot for curlers, and a Kinsmen versus Junior Ringette exhibition.

Manitoba joins national price stabilization for cattle and lambs

Manitoba Agriculture Minister Glen Findlay signed agreements to join the National Tripartite Price Stabilization Plans for beef cattle and lamb, with hogs also added. The changes allow more producers to participate, set benefit ceilings, and start a two year phase in while enrollment runs through March. Enrollments for cattle end March 10 and lamb March 31, retroactive coverage starts October 1, 1988 for cattle and January 1, 1989 for cow calf.

Hamiota golfer makes rare Texas ace on 149-yard hole

Jim Steven of Hamiota carded a hole-in-one January 14, 1989 at Harlingen Tony Butler Municipal Golf Course No 20. Using a 9 iron on 149 yards, it was his first ace in 30 years. Witnesses were Dora Steven and Russ and Janice Shayman. Likely the first ace by a Hamiota golfer that year.

Drought Assistance Details Expanded Across Canada

Canada’s CCDAP will pay about 850 million to drought hit farmers in 1988. Payments target township level losses with crop specific per acre amounts, covering grains oilseeds vegetables fruits and alfalfa. Applications began February 10 and final payouts start after yield data and processing in July.
