A wartime letter from Pte M M Atkinson describes life in France on June 17 1916. He and two others including Fred Heddesheimer and Clarence Murray share a barn shelter, rain and mud, and longing for Canada. He notes delayed mail from Hamiota, avoids grand cities, and remarks on Canadian casualties and trench conditions.
The writer, serving in the 1lth Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe in July 1916, details fellow Hamiota boys and officers from the 9th and 45th Battalions, mentions Thomas Lowry in Folkestone with family in England, and notes Don Van Male returning from the front and on leave. He expresses a wish to return home and to share more about the war later. The letter closes with Sergt W H Symonds.
Long list of Hamiota fair prizes across divisions with winners in gardening crafts and baked goods. Names like A C Kemp Mrs J Moore and M Miller appear repeatedly along with locations Brandon and Brandon area entries and several judging notes.
