The Echo announces a long weekend with a 5 00 p m Friday August 30 1991 advertising and news copy deadline to allow staff to enjoy time with family and friends. Cooperation is appreciated.
Miniota hosted its First Annual Shirt Sleeve Classic Mixed Bonspiel July 25 26 27 28 with 32 rinks taking part. Organizers planned free camping and full canteen meals with daily cuisines and a diverse field from Russell Virden Birtle Elkhorn Decker Oak River and twelve from Miniota. Winners included Gord Allison over Albert Watton Brad Yochim and Ed Shamrey in the A event with top money. Barry Dooles over Dave Hanlin Brad Thompson and Don McKean in the B event. Harry Hodges over Jim Brown with Ron Armstrong and Murray Foster in the C/D. An open mixed golf tournament featured 63 golfers. Recreation director Gwen Snell argues the Hamiota complex brings health safety, year round use, and local economic benefits. Volunteers shaped a $3 million design with shared kitchens, accessible access, and four dressing rooms to serve curling skating and tournaments.
The Hamiota Host Committee failed to secure the 1992 regional summer games for the Westman Sport Association. Virden Boissevain and Birtle won hosting rights with the events set for July 3 1992 and the provincial finals in August hosted by Minnedosa Neepawa.
