Manitoba Doctors Earn Senior CMA Membership in Ottawa

Dr John Edward Hudson of Hamiota and Dr Donald Wills Penner of St. Vital are elected to Senior Membership in the Canadian Medical Association. A ceremony will be held August 21 in Ottawa during the CMA annual meeting. Hudson, born 1917 in Hamiota, has served Manitoba physicians as MMA president and led state colleges. He practiced since 1946, led regional health councils, and remains active in Lions Club and church. He and his wife Dorothy have four children in wildlife related careers.

Kenton Community Enterprises reports finances and plans

At the Kenton Community Enterprises meeting final figures showed receipts of 2071.36 and expenditures of 1456.29 for the Ball Tournament. Dances are set for September 13 October 4 and November 1 from 9 pm to 1 am with 3 per person. Halloween masquerade planned for October 26. A light over the kitchen sink and a storage space light are to be installed, plus a budget to install a bar counter. Water heater half cost approved. Grounds by the hall to be landscaped to stop Legion Hall water leakage.

Mainstreet facelift approved for Birtle

Municipal Affairs Minister Andy Anstett announced a Main Street project for Birtle with total costs of 219 212 dollars. The province will fund 119 572 dollars, covering two thirds of public property improvements, and eligible business people receive seven thousand dollars for storefront renovations. The plan includes paving stone sidewalks, curbs, ramps, trees, a park rest area, street furniture, and renovated Town Office and museum facades.

Venables elected president of Canadian Community Newspapers Association

F D Don Venables of Hamiota Manitoba was named president of the CCNA at its 66th annual meeting in Quebec City. The 45 year old publisher has served on ManitobaCCNA and CCNA boards, with a long family history in The Echo dating to 1902. He began in journalism in 1957 and worked at MacGregor Herald Rivers Gazette Reporter Calgary Herald before returning to Hamiota in 1966.

Preston Family Reunion at Shoal Lake Center

Descendants of Issac and Mary Preston held the 2nd Preston Reunion at the Shoal Lake Drop-In center on Sunday August 4, 1985. Seventy two relatives aged 9 months to 85 years gathered from Sherwood Park Thompson Brandon Virden Winnipeg Dauphin Boissevain Strathclair Hamiota and Shoal Lake. Afternoon visits and games followed by a large cold supper.
