Invasive weed reduces pasture and hay yields in Manitoba

Officials warn the weed has little feed value and will infest pastures, lowering hay and fodder output. It is resistant to 2 4-D, especially in year two, but control is possible with 16 ounces per acre of 2 4-D applied to rosette growth in fall or second growth in spring. Mowing to prevent seed production and cultivation to destroy overwintering growth are advised. When hawks beard appears, raise mower cutting bar to clip seed heads above infested forage. Manitoba breeders are invited to submit herd details to the Livestock Branch before September 15 for the 1963 Royal Winter Fair, which runs November 15–23 in Toronto.
