Cable decision looms in Manitoba as WMCL faces hearing
A Winnipeg hearing on August 16 will decide if Westman Media Co op will proceed with its rural cable plan. The CRTC seeks two amendments to WMCL licences, aiming to remove public ownership and headend rules. Manitoba cooperatives press for public involvement, while private operators push for limited MTS participation. WMCL reports 1,837 subscribers by July with 850 Brandon installations and a Carberry sales blitz adding 102 sales. Public interest groups and local chambers back cooperative ownership and shared headend, amid a shift toward satellite tech and aging Tolstoi infrastructure.
