PFAA provide late Christmas payments to Western grain farmers

Agriculture Minister Alvin Hamilton announced PFAA will issue cheques in December with over half mailed by Christmas. Total payments for the year exceed $60,000 and represent a high since 1939, replacing the previous 1954 record. The program bases payments on half the cultivated acreage up to 200 acres with rates tied to local yield. Farmers fund the program via a 1 percent levy on grain, and public funds may cover over $50 million this year due to large payouts.
