Maxine Gray was crowned Manitoba Shorthorn Lassie on June 15 1978 by Rae Johnston 1977 Lassie. Daughter of Nora and Arnold Gray of Hamiota she will represent the Manitoba Shorthorn Club across Manitoba and Canada.
After two weeks without a pastor the Hamiota Pentecostal Church held morning and evening services on Sunday July 23 with Everett Gurr leading the morning worship and Pastor Ray Kroker preaching on abundance in Christ Luke 6 38. Kroker and family members plus a Brandon guest led the gospel singing and message east of the Creamy Drive-In. Attendance welcomed all in drive-in style.
A July 30 ceremony at Hamiota Municipal Park honored Dr. W. K. Hames of Kenton and Dr. J. E. Hudson of Hamiota for 32 years of service to area residents. Officials and MPs praised their work, presented coins and certificates, and a community picnic followed with band music and tributes.
Winnipeg The lowest bid for the East Grove Building renovations at the Manitoba School for Retardates in Portage la Prairie is 568 845 dollars from Ellwood McRorie Limited of Portage. Highways and Public Works Minister Harry Enns announced the project aims to bring all complex buildings to current standards with new electrical heating plumbing and a fire alarm and sprinkler system.
Hamiota 21 and under Girls travelled to Stonewall July 22 and 23 for Provincials. Players included Myrna Bryant Leanne Coulson Pat Fraser Shelley Haggarty Wanda Johnston Linda Oak den Dienna Mathison Maureen Mathison Shauna McKinnon Sheila McMillan Laurie Miller Lorna Shaw Heather Smith Sherry Smith. Coaches were Ken Mathison Brent Strachan and Dean McConnell with Jim Cockburn absent. They camped with Ken and Doris Mathison Ted and Audrey Coulson. First game Saturday 1:00 p.m. vs Grant Park Winnipeg ended 10-0 as Sherry Johnston shone. Second game 5:00 p.m. vs Fort Garry a 9-9 tie sent to a dramatic 7th inning win 12-11 with Shauna's triple. Shauna MVP. Sunday 11:00 a.m. vs Brandon 18-6 win. Heather MVP. 1:00 p.m. vs Stonewall 12-3 loss. Heather scored twice. Sherry and Maureen pitched. Heather caught all games. Final Grant Park beat Stonewall 6-0. gratitude to coaches cooks and cheering section.
A July 22 miscellaneous shower honored Miss Brenda Armstrong in Hamiota. Brenda, her mother Mrs. Ray Armstrong and the groom's mother Mrs. Myhara received corsages and were escorted by committee members. A Canada Packers wagon delivered gifts as Brenda was thanked for her many presents, followed by a contest and lunch.
