Public meeting on waste plant site in Hamiota CA

About 65 residents attended a July 26 briefing at the Hamiota Community Centre on Manitoba Hazardous Waste Management Corporation plans to locate a treatment facility for hazardous wastes in Manitoba. officials described the project, safety context, and access to information, with a local office to be established and a Community Liaison Officer sought.

TOPS Members Lose Weight as August Suspends Meetings

During July TOPS members shed 29 pounds, though holidays reduce attendance leading to suspended meetings in August. Weigh-ins continue at the usual time 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday to keep progress ongoing.

Lodge marks 80th anniversary in Newdale ceremony

Covenant Lodge No 67 I.C.C.F. celebrated its 80th anniversary on June 5 1989 noting the lodge was founded June 8 1909 by Grand Master James Duncan with Arthur Shaw as Grand Warden. Charter members include Dr Robert Kippen Thos Leggatt Fred L Mason and others.

Donna Hunter Re-Elected President of Welsh Pony Society

Kenton Manitoba resident Donna Hunter was re elected president of the Canadian Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Canada at the AGM in Wolfesville Nova Scotia on May 27. It marks the society 10th anniversary and Hunters sixth term as president after governing since 1979 with Renview bred Welsh Ponies for 25 years. The 1990 AGM will be hosted by the Manitoba Welsh Pony Association in Brandon.

Hamiota Class of 1969 holds 20 year reunion

About 53 alumni gathered at Ron and JoAnn Ramsey’s home on Sunday July 23 to celebrate the HCI Class of 1969 reunion. Attendees included classmates from Regina Winnipeg and other communities with teachers present. A barbecue followed reminiscence and photo taking while forty five dollars remained for warded to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Donnie Guntel.

Walk-a-thon and Bike-a-thon Raise 2600 for New Hamiota Rink

The Hamiota and District Sports Complex sponsored walk-a-thon and bike-a-thon in June attracted 52 participants who raised 2600.14 for the new rink. The Fund Committee thanks participants sponsors prize donors and refreshment volunteers for a successful event.

On August 1 1834 slavery was abolished in British Columbia and in 1883 CPR workers discovered nickel at Sudbury Ontario. The notes mark two historic milestones in Canadian labor and industry within the 19th century.

Hamiota Hosts Provincial Bantam B Softball Title Tournament

Hamiota hosted the 1989 Provincial Bantam B Softball Championship over July 22 and 23 with sixteen teams from Winnipeg Beausejour Winkler Lundar Dauphin Boissevain Oak River Balmoral and Hamiota. Oak River defeated Boissevain twice to win the title. Hamiota placed fifth and will return with most players next year. The Mermaid League clubs also shone with Pee Wee Oak River and Midget Elkhorn taking their divisions.
