The Manitoba Women’s Institute provincial convention shifts from Winnipeg to Brandon University June 9 to 11. Activities include a keynote by Dr E J Tyler of Brandon University and a panel on battered children by W D McFarland. Luncheon and social events feature a Tuesday banquet and a Wednesday smorgasbord and Centennial party.

The McConnell W I met at Mrs Gwen Hamilton’s home April 21 with nine members and one visitor. They discussed the Red Cross canvas, Centennial Ball plans for May 15, and a memorial service at the District Convention. Agnes Mitchell won the raffle. officers were named and constitution prepared for Canadian Figure Skating Association affiliation. A possible Amateur Coaches Clinic and a Brandon summer skating school were noted. Transfers included Paul to Hamiota and the August family relocation to Hamiota in June.

Hamiota Ladies Aid Plans Renova tions and Tours
Hamiota District No 7A Ladies Aid held a meeting with fourteen districts represented. Minutes approved as renovations to the hospital were agreed and local service notes recorded including 108 treated patients in March, 13 major cases, 39 minor, 21 tissue, 12 accidents, 19 bottles of blood, 4 local donors, and 6749 pounds of laundry costing 539.92. Regional rep Verna Findlay spoke on the fall conference and auxiliary histories. An annual regional set for May 14 in Brandon, a hospital tea May 8, and a June 19 supper at Cardale were arranged.

Annual Curling Meeting Held In Hamiota
Hamiota Curling Club held its annual meeting on Friday April 24 at the Fraternal Hall after a banquet by the Ladies Auxiliary. President Ross Fraser presided as members were remembered and gifts presented for departing service. The Strachan rink led district and zone honours and trophies were awarded to several clubs. The meeting approved purchases of new equipment and renovations to the rink including rubber backs, scoreboards from Macdonald Export Tobacco, and potential ventilation work. A curlo event was planned for June 11 with Wallace Fraser heading the committee.

Contemporary Dancers Perform At Hamiota Winnipeg Event
The Hamiota Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers directed by Miss Rachel Browne presented a diverse program in the Collegiate Auditorium on Monday April 20. About 700 junior and high school students attended as the non profit group tours Manitoba schools during Centennial Year with Manitoba Arts Council support.

Moline 4 H Club Marks 1970 Achievement Night
The Moline Home Economics 4 H Club held its Achievement Night on Friday April 24 1970 with twelve members presenting programs themed Spirit of 76. Rodale Underhill Junior leader introduced commentary Cheryl Greer was chosen model and Rodale Underhill a seven year member dressed a garment. Jo Anne English club president chaired the evening. Mrs Carol Burton Home Economist judged the club's work during the afternoon. A buffet lunch concluded the 1970 event.

Fiddlers Contest and Dance at McConnell Community Centre
On Friday April 24 at the McConnell Community Centre nine contestants competed in a fiddlers contest. Vic Lobban of Pope won first prize, Mike Chawluk of Menzies second, Sam Henry of Oak River third, and Kas Rudnnski of Rapid City fourth. Rod Parker hosted with judges John E. Riddell Arnold Gray and Sam Stewart. Strathclair junior square dance sets directed by Mrs Mervin Stimpser added to the entertainment. A dance followed with music by the fiddlers and accompanists.

Decker Legion Crib Tourney Produces Tight Finale
On April 20 at Decker Hall seventy eight crib players gathered to decide the champion of the Decker Legion event. Rudy Deutch of Decker won the first event while Harvey Gray of Hamiota and Pennington of Oak River tied for second. participants from Oak River Miniota Hamiota and Crandall were thanked for attending on a stormy night.

Centennial Committee Meeting In Hamiota May 14 1970
The Centennial Committee will meet May 14 at 8:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Centennial Farm Contest entries are available from Dennis McMahon. The contest honors farms owned by the same family for generations with one hundred prizes. A project from the April 27 meeting plans a tennis court estimated around four thousand dollars with Howard McKinnon Arthur Knight and Charlie Randell overseeing costs and design.
