The Independent Order of Odd Fellows held a well attended service at Knox Church last Sunday. A volunteer choir of men led the singing due to illness in the Knox church choir. The preacher spoke on the text from 1 Samuel 17 8 focusing on truth purity courage and sympathy as the things that make a man.
A Wednesday Board of Trade session in the Council Chamber focused on railroad accommodation. Resolutions urged CPR to maintain mixed trains and add tri weekly passenger service with connections to Winnipeg main line, and to stop all through trains at Oakner. They proposed CPR branch to Birtle and asked the town to pave main thoroughfares with gravel and improve street lighting. The group planned further talks with CPR officials.
Shoal Lake plans a Grain Growers picnic with a first prize of 100 dollars for senior baseball and football and a second prize of 50 dollars for each. The town has formed a baseball club for the season to play mature ball under the athletic association. Hunter offers on site pipe repairs while you wait.
The Standard of Empire notes the Hon. Rodmond Palen Roblin, Manitoba premier since 1900, with portfolios in Railways and Agriculture. The profile recalls his 1888 legislature entry, 1900 premiership, 1993 and 1907 elections by wide margins, and his influence in the grain trade.
An April meeting in Hamiota completed the organization of The Municipal Light Heat and Power Company Limited with capital of 50000 dollars. Directors include W.A. Thomson as president and J.T. Costigan as secretary treasurer, with plans to build municipal light heating and power plants across Manitoba and western provinces.
The community presses forward for a new Hamiota hospital with generous donations and canvass success. An Arrowton gathering raised funds, Mr. D Cowling sent with a ten dollar contribution, and Lavinia district reports about forty dollars subscribed, a quarter paid.
