Old John the Gardener and the Black Gate Mystery

In a dense narration involving Sylvia the housemaid and Uncle Black, the tale threads through a garden scene, flirtation, and social tensions. Characters include John the gardener, Joscelind, and Traceland, with domestic life at Black George’s residence and a developing plot about family standing and duty. The passage blends archaic dialect with hints of scandal, inheritance, and character in a long domestic tableau.
