The 25 year old Don McLean of Sunnyside Black Mountain son of Mr and Mrs Wd McLean died when his Ford left The Pinch road near 15 mile peg and plunged down an embankment. He was a popular sport figure and Lilygrove Cricket Club secretary. A large funeral was held at Black Mountain with many wreaths and a coroner's inquest at Armidale.
Coroner rules McLean died from a broken neck after his motor car overturned. Witnesses describe removing a man from under the vehicle at speed around 15 to 20 mph then noting the car crossed a bank. McLean, a married man with wife and three children, had an old Ford and life insurance.
The Church of Bogleod Ball at the Literary Institute on the 2nd inst. drew about 200 people. The hall was decorated with blue and gold streamers and palms, the event praised for ecosocial and social success. Prizes were won in balloon, Monte Carlo, spot, and novelty yard dances, with raffles and gifts noted.
Weekend play at Guyra saw Gret Hage leading the Rosell Cup with several contenders. Winners included A A Brown on forfeit from Comedy and Dutton with 5 up. The Guyra Golf Club held an Eclectic Competition with Monthly Medal rounds and set plans for an Open Mixed Foursomes and a Bogey Competition next Saturday. Winners included A A Williamson and Hoth competitors posted high scores. a Ladies Canadian Foursome saw Mrs Chisholm, Mrs Bortenbeker, and others lead with strong scores as play continues this weekend.
Mr W Woodward released 700 trout fry in Oban Creek on Friday, while Mr L P Dutton and Mr F White released 2000 fry in Falconer Creek and Bald Blair Sanctuary Lagoon respectively. Armidale Hatchery failed to meet demand for 40,000 forthcoming fry. A meeting on the matter will be held at the Memorial Ball tomorrow night. Goyre Junior Red Cross Frolic and Dance, Saturday afternoon after 2, at Odd Fellows Hall, with Gauyra Picture Co supplying a motive for juveniles. Gayre District Band to perform on Saturday night at 7. Mr W A Roberts donates £1 for the boat collection of vegetables for the forthcoming Goya Show.
Rin Lomond registered victory over the Goyre Imperials at Goyre in a 13 run win. O'Donnall top scored with 17, while Adameon added 27 and Egan 5 for 32. notable retirements included Little at 29 and Coleman at 22. Multiple players including Gilmour and Wall contributed modest scores as the match saw several outs and key bowling figures. Upcoming schedule notes mention Goyra Warstabs versus Lilygrove postponed due to Mr. McLean's death with Tedworth set for next Saturday on ground by 1.45 p.m.
W H Weickel announces the opening of a dressmaking business in the Arcadia Buildings Guyra. The shop will operate as usual with dressmaking services offered on the premises to customers and the public.
