Heat wave affected western towns with temperatures up to 107 at Ubbuburra and White Cliffs while dust storms swept the region. General MacArthur reports Japanese air raids on American warships in Leyte, fifteen enemy planes downed, and rains slowing ground operations on Leyte.
Saturday collision near Cox and Moges Garage involved a Lady driver whose car struck the Argus office verandah posts, causing damage to the signboard and structure while the car sustained serious damage to mud-guard hood axle and radiator. The driver escaped with shock. Also notes mail clearance changes from June 1 and no Sunday mail deliveries from 27th inst. Mr Joe Hiscox bought a Cliff and Buntings Patent Prize Chaffcutter for contract work to improve patron results.
The Guyra branch of the G U O C F held the Annual Ball at Oddfellows Hall, with about forty couples attending. Net proceeds reached around £50 10 with £34 contributed to this fund for oral accompaniments. Donations and local subscriptions supported the Junior Red Cross and hospital funds. Council members and guests heard Dr Youman mock a ratepayer who called the engineer a pommy. Youman urged the man to stand for election, hinting Dr Wheaton might be one. The exchange raised charges the shire is ruled by pommies despite white Australia claims.
