Oronsova and the Orient Line Liner Legacy in Era of Wonders
In April the Orient Line ordered a 28 000 ton liner from Vickers Armstrongs at Barrow for the Australian mail service. The new vessel Orsova follows a tradition of starting names with O, reflecting the line’s habit of reusing strong predecessor names. Orsova, completed in 1908 as a 12 000 ton liner, served Australia and WWI as a transport, then on June 20 1936 began its 70th voyage to Australia, returning to Tilbury September 24 with a long paying-off pennant. It reportedly traveled over 7.4 million miles at an average 15.3 knots and never failed thermally.
