Philip four month old son of Mr and Mrs D K Lockyer Lackey Street was christened at St James England on Sunday Mesdames John Eggleston Co Finlayson R Eggleston and Miss J M Purser visited Toowoomba last week Miss Melva Martin of Terden Street and Miss Pat Williams of Bradley Street spent the weekend at Kentarwker Mr Norman Jackson of Westbrook and Mr Alec Jackson of Highfield are attending the Newcastle wool sales
The Paul Cullen Benefit Fund organizers thank supporters for a splendid response from Guyra and district. The Bald Blair function drew a large crowd, with donations from those unable to attend. They presented Paul Cullen with £110 to ease his distress and promised a Christmas fowls gift.
A substantial grant-in-aid was approved by the State National Fitness Council for the Guyra Shire National Fitness Movement to erect the proposed community hall. G Walker announced similar grants to Amworth and Muswellbrook and plans for New Year’s Day National Fitness sports were discussed. A women’s committee will run a sandwich stall, with CWA Younger Set backing a fundraising function early next year.
Late Saturday night a plate-glass window was broken in Mr J R McAlister's chemist shop on Bradley Street. A group of youths chased each other and one ran into the window. The uninjured youth notified police. The window valued at £50 was insured.
Residents near Ollera and Malpas Streets allege an after dark prowler rattling door-knobs and tapping windows. Guyra Police patrols have continued but no suspect has been seen or arrested.
Archaeologists at the Pontic Institute of Christian Archaeology report a 78 AD wall inscription in Caesar’s Palace on the Palatine Hill naming the Consul and mentioning Christ. The fragment, verified by Vatican City Radio, adds to early Christian presence in Rome.
Tingha Progress Association hears from Forestry official I C Dutton on gaining official recognition for a local bush fire brigade under the Bush Fires Act. MLA Davis Hughes pledges support while council cooperation is sought to proclaim A Riding as a bush fire area and advance bridge projects on New Valley Road and Sutherlands Waters.
Mr C Greenlands clarified a Bundarra Progress Association request for repairs on the Tingha Bundarra Road ramps noting many were in need and denying a claim that a Bassendean ramp existed.
Next Friday will be visiting day at Guyra Central School, the first for many years. Parents will view physical training, folk dancing, games, and recreational activities including puppet shows and films. They will also see items purchased by the P and C Association, including a new wire recording apparatus at the school.
At the New England County Council meeting the Acting Electrical Engineer and County Clerk were asked to arrange a conference with the North-West County Council to discuss Black Mountain electricity extensions and report back. The council authorized cookery demonstrations, city power decisions, and tenders for Oakey River dam works.
Edward Doughan died at his Armidale home on Jessie Street after a long railway career exceeding 44 years. He served as station master at Guyra and Ben Lomond before retiring to Manilla duties. A former sportsman, he enjoyed cricket football and greyhound racing and was active in the St Vincent de Paul Society. Burial followed Tuesday at Armidale cemetery after Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral.
St James Church hosts a rich program led by Armidale Cathedral Choir and String Quartet with soprano Wilma Jonesezzo Dutch bass baritone Henk Spruyte, Mrs Huxtable's Dramatic Group, and community hymn singing. Program starts at 1 PM with a collection for church funds.
