Fire nearly destroys one of town's oldest houses

A mid day fire at the Coo 9e boarding house, among the town's oldest buildings, threatened the main structure before residents and volunteers including Constables Shields Upcleman and Pringle & Co. staff fought the flames. Back premises burned, total damage about £500 insured. Origin undetermined.

Annual Ball by Guyra Memorial Institute Sees Successful Turnout

The annual ball held on Wednesday and Thursday nights last week by the Guyra Memorial Institute was well attended. Music by Guyra Orchestra and extras from Mr G A Butt, a generous supper, and grateful thanks to Mrs W Briggs and helpers marked the event. Dancing continued to 1.30 am and a seagrass armchair won in the guessing competition by Mrs Jabez Hill. The Juvenile Ball on Thursday night drew near 80 attendees, with music by W G Brodie and R D Morgan. The function is expected to show a credit balance of £37.
