The Guyra Shire Council and the Country Women's Association back a Play Centre to provide a safe, attractive recreational space for children. The Guyra branch seeks to raise 100 pounds to firmly establish and beautify the centre, with strong community support already evident.
At the Guyra P A and H Association annual meeting Mr A B Forsyth urged non competitive stud sheep exhibits to boost the sheep pavilion. He called for a breeders meeting from Armidale Glen Innes Inverell to plan, with W C Starr and R D Mulligan supporting the idea. Forsyth also pressed for revised shearing dates to align with zoning and avoid too little wool at show time.
Holidaymakers and locals figure in Guyra district life with Sydney trips by Mr and Mrs H Hanna and others. Doreen Ditton returns home from Armidale for vacation. Nancy McAlister resigns from Guyra Shire Council in view of upcoming marriage to Geo Campbell. Engaged to James Stewart are Lois Bogeees and James, the latter being the second son of Mr and Mrs Stewart of Moray Guyra.
The Guyra Shire Council considered a proposal to secure premises for a public library. A Memorial Institute deputation offered two rooms with books and fittings for 1 per week, or £3 per week as offices, with ongoing caretaker costs and loss of current library revenue. The CWA offered rent of the Rest Room area. Council deferred decision to further examine the offers and financial implications.
The Guyra CWA branch reports strong town support for a children’s play centre sponsored by the Guyra ranch unit. Members approve shrub planting and garden layout with plans sent to Sydney for expert advice. Donations from several residents totalled funds and a Melbourne Cup day monster party is advertised to boost the project.
The CWA in Guyra reports strong interest with eighteen new members joining during the recent month. At a Saturday meeting at the Rest Rooms the president Mrs. J. T. Parsons welcomed newcomers and discussed library space, conference plans in Sydney, and hospital carnival support.
Guyra Shire Council on Tuesday moved to seek cooperation with other local bodies in ACRE to push legislation banning night shooting and spotlighting. Dr C E Wheaton cited sheep and a cow shot as reason for heavy penalties and authorities’ attention. Councillors Mulligan Dettmann Stanley Youman and others urged action citing stock losses and dangers to livestock from poison baits and misdirected shooters.
The report notes ties banquets and entertainments with cleaning costs offsetting profits. Hire fees rise to £2 and Mr Starr donated wood for Rest Rooms. Mrs Williams reports £1 14s cleared. Treasurer Mrs Mason logs over £10 in credits. After discussion the hall function is postponed this year to focus on Melbourne Cup party and establish the play centre.
