NSW Trout Week Sees Record Rainbows and Hatchery Plans
The NSW Chief Secretary reports trout fishing week ending April 14 produced larger fish than prior years with a record female rainbow weighing most likely the biggest yet from Tuross River. Other standout catches include a 7 lb rainbow at Eucumbene near Kiandra and a 10 lb female rainbow from the same waters. Drought raised water temperatures reduced catches in some areas, and NSW plans to supply 500000 rainbow trout eggs from New Zealand for incubating at Prospect, Creel, and Aranangie hatcheries. Fry will be distributed statewide and interested helpers should apply for local fry allocations.

The State Fisheries Department will build a trout hatchery at Urandangie with a capacity to hatch over 200 000 young fish each winter. This project aims to stock streams around Guyra and the Tablelands to improve fishing as progress continues in the district.
