Rejuvenation of Potato Soils Through Pasture Rotation
In a long study by Mr. Simpson, 3 pounds each of red clover and rye grass were broadcast on a depleted paddock in March 1948 to revitalize soils poor from decades of potato and cereal cropping. After grazing and winter growth, the paddock was ploughed and replanted with certified Sebago potatoes in December, showing strong soil renewal and promising yields. The success led to plans to extend pasture sowing to 12 more acres and eventually all cultivation areas to sustain profitable potato production.
