Hatchery to Open in September in New South Wales

The Serpentine hatchery near Ebor in northern New South Wales, funded partly by the Department and Rod Fishermen's Associations, will officially open in September. It will hatch 1.5 million trout ova from New Zealand and Victoria, supply streams in the district, and feature a fly casting event at the opening with visitors from across the north.

Guyra Women’s Hockey Players Selected for Country Week

Three Guyra players Shirley Parry Valma Jayden and Maureen Lee were chosen for Country Week. Shirley and Valma left by train for Sydney last Saturday while Maureen could not get time off work. Two teams will travel to Inverell on Sunday for matches.

Golf Notes Show Enthusiasm Despite Washout and Wet Course

The Bunner notes 14 players, including three new members, turned up Sunday for informal play on the bottom nine holes after Saturday rains. Bill Johnston posted a sequence of strong holes, including a 3 on the 10th and a 16th birdie on a wet fairway. The secretary lists three years of financial members and will accept subscriptions while the treasurer is away. Next weekend offers Par handicap on Saturday and stroke handicap on Sunday.

Move for State Authority to Control Fishing

Mr F B Schubert outlined a NSW proposal to require licences for all streams and fish breeds under a State Authority. He noted Victoria already licences all inland fishing and that hatcheries would be taken over with expert staff. Three regional inspectors would determine fish types for streams and lagoons while clubs remain active to distribute fish and run events.

Depwater Rural Co operative to wind up pool machinery

A special meeting of the Depwater Rural Co operative Society unanimously decided to wind up its pool machinery, in use since 1945. President O H Lockwood said individual farmers bought their own gear, leaving the society financially sound and ready to seek Rural Industries Board guidance on disposal. A further meeting will be held to discuss details.

Annual Meeting of New England Tennis Group

The third annual general meeting at Guyra heard that matches with Newcastle and the mid coast were not finalized. Inverell led the northern zone, Armidale No 1 won the southern zone, and a grand final would be played between Inverell and Armidale No 3, with a potential final at Glen Innes if Armidale wins the July 16 home match. Nominations close end of July for a revised teams competition beginning in August with monthly matches on the first and last Sundays.
